The IMPORTANCE of
"built environment" to the community / people / nation
It is undeniable that built environment is important to all of us, but have you ever though why is it so important? Let's find out!
-
Ensure Safety of the people
How to ensure that? Firstly, a well built environment should have high tolerance earthquake system to make sure when earthquake strikes to the place at least there are shelters for people to stay. Secondly, in Rocinha the favela were built by people who lack of knowledge of built environment. For example, if they wanted to expand the building they simply just stack it on top of the existing building. Which made a lot of blind spot in the favela and narrow streets for policing, of course that the percentage of criminal activity to happen is very high. For example, robbery, drug dealers selling drugs in the alley which give a bad reputation for the city or place.
-
Improve Public Health
Every one of us wishes to live, work, and spend time in buildings and settings that are seen as secure. But, built environment is not just about good planning on the buildings, also to improve public health. Even in this day and age of chronic illnesses, there is still a strong link between population health and the built environment. For example walking, it is one of the most important activity for public health initiatives to boost elderly people's physical activity levels. When there's a place where encourage people walk out from house to do physical activity it represented the successful of the place.
-
A Convenient Place for People to live
In Rocinha, where the buildings are built by people who lack of knowledge in architecture accident will happen in any minute. Instead of government spending money on a cable car project which is not prioritizing safety of people but prioritizing the good view of favela, they should develop the favela by building infrastructure which make a place convenient for people to stay. Let's say hospital, when accident happened the most crucial thing is time, if it's a serious injury he or she might die when on the way to a distant hospital.
